الطقوس

The Burn

One act, three steps. This is all there is to it.

Lighting the charcoal on a gold bakhoor burner 01

Light it

A single coal, or switch on the electric burner. Wait until the coal turns grey at the edge.

Smoke rising from burning bakhoor 02

Wait

Place a few chips of bakhoor on top. The smoke starts thin, then turns thick and sweet.

Bakhoor smoke filling the room 03

Breathe

Three minutes later the room has changed. That is the whole test.

كيف تعرف

How you know it is real

Bangladesh's fragrance market is full of fakes. Three tests you can run yourself.

TEST 01

Watch the smoke

Real

Burns clean and pale. The smoke rises in a thin column and smells sweet from the first minute.

Fake

Cut with filler and sawdust. The smoke turns grey, hangs heavy, and catches at the back of the throat.

TEST 02

Wait for the coal to die

Real

Genuine oud clings to fabric and curtains. The room still holds it hours after the burning stops.

Fake

Perfumed sawdust. The scent leaves with the smoke and there is nothing left by the time you sit down.

TEST 03

Look at the price

Real

Oud wood is scarce, so it costs what it costs. An honest seller will tell you why a piece is expensive.

Fake

Far below the market. If the price seems impossible for real oud, it is not real oud.

You do not have to take our word for any of this. Come to the shop and burn a piece before you buy anything.

أسئلة شائعة

Questions people ask us

If yours is not here, message us on WhatsApp and we will answer properly.

Before you buy
How do I know it is authentic?

We import direct from the Gulf and stock the houses themselves: Lattafa, Al Haramain, Rasasi, Ard Al Zaafaran, Surrati, Almas, Al Rehab and Ibrahim Al Qurashi, alongside our own House of MashHur line.

You do not have to take our word for it. Real bakhoor burns with pale smoke that smells sweet from the first minute, and the scent stays in fabric and curtains for hours after the coal dies. Fakes are cut with filler, the smoke turns grey and catches in the throat, and the smell leaves when the smoke does.

Best of all, come to the shop and burn a piece before you buy anything.

Can I pay after I receive it?

Yes. Cash on delivery is available across Bangladesh for eligible orders. You pay nothing upfront and hand over the money when the parcel reaches you. bKash and Nagad are also accepted.

For bulk orders, customised packages or high value orders, we may ask for advance payment before shipment. Our team will tell you clearly before anything is dispatched.

How long does delivery take?

Inside Dhaka: 1 to 3 working days. Outside Dhaka: 2 to 5 working days. Orders are usually processed within 24 hours of confirmation.

Timing can shift with courier delays, public holidays, weather or heavy campaign periods. If your order is urgent, contact us before placing it and we will guide you.

What does delivery cost?

The charge is shown at checkout, or confirmed by our team before dispatch. It depends on where you are, the weight and size of the order, and whether it contains fragile items such as burners, glass bottles or humidifiers, which need heavier packaging.

Can I visit the shop?

Yes, and we would rather you did. Our Experience Center is at Shop No. 32, Ground Floor, Baly Complex, Rajlokkhi, Sector 3, Uttara, Dhaka 1230.

You are welcome to burn a piece of bakhoor and smell an attar on skin before deciding. Open in Google Maps

What if I do not like the scent when it arrives?

About the fragrance
What is bakhoor?

Bakhoor is scented wood chips, traditionally agarwood, which is oud, soaked in fragrant oils and resins and then burned to perfume a room. It is a centuries old Arabian tradition used in homes, at gatherings and before prayer.

It is not incense sticks. Bakhoor burns on a coal or an electric plate and gives a far heavier, sweeter smoke that settles into fabric.

What is the difference between attar and perfume?

Attar is oil, perfume is alcohol based. Attar is concentrated fragrance oil applied in small amounts to the skin, usually the wrist or behind the ear. It has no alcohol, warms with your body heat and can last most of a day from a single touch.

Perfume, or EDP, is diluted in alcohol and sprayed. It projects further and is noticed faster, but usually fades sooner than a good attar.

Can I burn bakhoor before prayer?

Yes. Perfuming the home and clothing before prayer and before Jummah is a long standing practice, and bakhoor has been used this way across the Muslim world for centuries.

Many of our customers burn it on Thursday evening and Friday morning, and during Ramadan. Attar, being free of alcohol, is also widely chosen for wearing to the mosque.

Using it at home
How do I burn bakhoor?

Light a single charcoal disc and wait until it turns grey at the edge, or simply switch on an electric burner. Place a few chips of bakhoor on top. The smoke starts thin, then turns thick and sweet.

Three minutes later the room has changed. Carry the burner through the house, and hold clothes or a scarf over the smoke if you want the scent to travel with you.

Should I choose an electric or a manual burner?

Electric for everyday use. No coal, no ash, no waiting. Switch it on, place the chips, done. Best if you burn most days or have children in the house.

Manual, the mabkhara, for gatherings and guests. The coal gives a fuller, heavier smoke and the ritual itself is part of the occasion. Most of our regular customers end up owning both.

Do I need charcoal, and where do I get it?

Only for a manual burner. Electric burners need none.

We sell quick light charcoal discs made for bakhoor. Ordinary cooking coal is not suitable, as it smokes badly and spoils the fragrance. Add a few discs to your order and you have everything you need in one parcel.

How long does the scent last?

Genuine bakhoor keeps a room scented for several hours after burning, and clothes or curtains in the room will hold it longer still. A three to five minute burn is enough for most rooms.

If the smell disappears the moment the smoke stops, what you have is perfumed sawdust rather than real bakhoor.

Is the smoke safe around children?

Bakhoor smoke is natural, but it is still smoke. Burn it in a room with some air movement, keep the burner well out of a child's reach, and never leave a lit coal unattended.

If anyone in the house has asthma or is sensitive to smoke, an electric burner at a lower setting, or a humidifier with fragrance oil, gives you the scent with far less smoke.

Still unsure? We would rather answer than have you guess.

Come and smell them yourself.

Bakhoor is hard to judge from a photograph. Our shop is open six days a week, and you are welcome to burn a piece before you buy anything.
